The evaluation and treatment of the equine athlete for performance related problems is a large and growing part of our practice.
At the clinic, we have the capability to watch horses work in one or both of our two riding rings, with different depths of footing. This allows us to visualize a subtle lameness that may only be apparent in a very specific circumstance. Our ambulatory clinicians can also come to your farm and evaluate your horse’s movement in his regular environment. Our high quality ultrasonography allows us to visualize tendons and ligaments whenever our performance evaluations indicate a problem, and our detailed computed radiography can highlight subtle bony lesions before they become career-limiting injuries.
Our treatment options for various soft-tissue injuries include high-powered focused shockwave therapy, which we have been employing since July of 2002. More recently we have also begun offering biological therapies such as the injection of fat or bone marrow derived stem cells, or platelet-rich plasma, into soft-tissue lesions. These biological injections can provide both a matrix as well as growth factors to stimulate the healing process.
For specific joints which may have sustained an injury or arthritis related changes, we can offer intra-articular injections to provide focused therapy. In addition to high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (which helps to lubricate joints), and the traditional anti-inflammatory steroid therapy, we can also offer IRAP therapy. IRAP is a process which harvests your horse’s own anti-inflammatory factors which are then injected into a problem joint.
With these progressive diagnostic and treatment modalities, we hope to keep your horse in top performance condition!
