Dr. Smith grew up in Haymarket, VA, where he spent most of his childhood on the back of a cutting horse. He trained cutting horses professionally until the age of 22, when he became an Animal Science student at Virginia Tech. Dr. Smith completed his Bachelor of Science degree with honors and was accepted in the 2009 class at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine (NCSU-CVM). After graduating with his DVM, Dr. Smith then completed a large animal rotating internship at NCSU-CVM and then moved north to do a surgical internship at New England Equine Practice in Brewster, NY. He then did a 3-year large animal surgical residency at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, where he stayed on to complete a PhD in advanced diagnostic imaging of osteoarthritis. From 2017 to 2020, Dr. Smith served as a Clinical Assistant Professor in large animal surgery. During that time, he became certified in equine spinal manipulation and developed a special interest in equine podiatry.
Dr. Smith’s special interests include sports medicine, diagnostic imaging, podiatry, and sinus disease.
On his off time, Dr. Smith spends his time with his wife, Amanda, and their two kids, Grady and Evelyn. He enjoys spending time with his family, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, and riding horses with his dad.
